有個(gè)女巫聲稱自己能用某種方式使神靈息怒，只有她才擁有這個(gè)秘訣。她四處招搖撞騙，因此得到了不少酬金。但是，后來有人控告她亂用巫術(shù)，便將她送上了法庭，并要求將她處死，因?yàn)樗c魔鬼打交道。后來，她被定了罪，并判處了死刑。在離開被告席時(shí)，其中一個(gè)法官對(duì)她說：“你自稱能平息神靈的憤怒，那么，現(xiàn)在為何連凡人的憤怒也平息不了呢？”

A Witch professed to be able to avert the anger of the gods by means of charms，of which she alone possessed the secret；and she drove a brisk trade.and made a fat livelihood out of it.But certain persons accused her of black magic and carried her before the judges，and demanded that she should be put to death for dealings with the Devil.She was found guilty and condemned to death：and one of the judges said to her as she was leaving the dock，“You say you can avert the anger ofthe gods.How comes it，then，that you have failed to disarm the enmity of men?”
